Daddy Knows Best - The Peugeot 3008 SUV

Perhaps it was my long daily commute to work – or perhaps it was how I was always travelling around town. Something prompted Dad to get me my own set of wheels!

I was elated. Thanks, Daddy! 

That very night, I started my online search for the best options available in Singapore. I wanted something that looked fashionable, felt comfortable and would stay desirable in the long run.

Well, when it comes to cars, Daddy knows best. He saw me looking at the usual Japanese suspects and recommended the Peugeot 3008 SUV instead. He said it was good looking, large enough to make me feel safe and is highly-acclaimed (It was named Car of the Year 2017). He also mumbled something about space for kids and strollers but I pretended not to hear him. I’m too young to settle down, Dad. Needless to say, he helped me to book a test drive.

Big on sophistication.

I’ve always thought that SUVs were supposed to be large, bulky things and that all those nice pictures of the 3008 I found online were too good to be true. In real life, however, the 3008 was indeed large (between a classic sedan and full-sized SUV in size) but also very sleek, more so than I thought. Overall, it just looked sophisticated. Not at all brutish like some SUVs are. I loved how the chrome grille worked with the headlights to present a distinctive face that felt almost alive. The fluid look of the exterior design also made it stand out from your typical blocky SUV. 

I couldn’t resist taking a selfie with it. 

Complementing the looks was how everything felt well-made. Take the doors. They closed with a reassuring, almost-plush thump without a single rattle.

Looks? Check.

Why drive when you can fly?

Peugeot i-Cockpit

I got in and what I saw made me do a double take. Hey...this cabin feels like a pilot’s cockpit! Named the Peugeot i-Cockpit®, it was fashioned after the captain’s seat on an airliner. I slid onto the seat and was happy to find it was plush and comfortable.

What I really loved was how, like a real pilot, I was surrounded by gadgets. These include the futuristic joystick, the head-up display, the touchscreen, and the chrome, cockpit-style switches that controlled settings for the aircon, radio, sat-nav, etc. Most of all, the compact yet sporty steering wheel was superb, as it allowed me to steer into tricky little spots easily. 

I was also happy to find out that the good stuff didn’t stop at the driver’s cabin. The passenger seats were also spacious and incredibly comfortable – making the car ideal for my frequent trips to Malaysia with my girlfriends. You see, crossing the checkpoints means we have to put up with epic-length waits – but with such comfort, we wouldn’t mind. Not as much anyway.

Style meets substance.

You know about the old adage ‘All style, no substance’. Thankfully, this did not apply to the 3008. I drove the car up a series of steep slopes and expected it to just chug along.

However, the 3008 powered up the peaks without a problem, thanks to the 1.2 PureTech EAT6 turbo engine that was named International Engine of the Year thrice, from 2015 to 2017.

As if that was not enough, switching to turbo mode allowed me to accelerate effortlessly and thunder down the roads. I was also told that the 3008 is pretty fuel efficient, which meant that I’ll be able to save on road tax and petrol. Sweet!

My only concern? The upholstered fabric interior. It looked and felt nice, but might be difficult to clean if my passengers were to spill anything like coffee. It was a minor point though, as I fully intend to jealously keep my new car clean. 

Inside and out, I felt that the 3008 was a real stunner. I’d say it’s the perfect ride for turning heads as I cruise down the highways.

Of course, Daddy already knew this.
